Getai Grotesk Display is an open-source font that took inspiration from the traditional Chinese Getai font style. Getai, or literally translated as song stage in Chinese, is a live stage performance during Chinese festivals especially Ghost Festivals that is commonly held in Singapore, Malaysia and some parts of Indonesia. As part of the creator’s final year project, Sylvester Tan tries to incorporate the features of the Chinese characters design seen in Getai performances into the latin characters. He hopes that with such incorporation into the latin characters which the younger generations are more accustomed to, it can help Singaporean youths to overcome cultural estrangement felt towards Getai which normally seen as old-fashioned.
The font is beautifully constructed and the elongated ink trap flows well with the strokes of the characters. It supports basic latin characters and some punctuations. You can download this font for free in the link below.
